Travelodge has opened the first branded value hotel in the heart of Walthamstow’s town centre. The new 107-room property, which represents a £9 million investment, is located at Station Approach and has created 19 new jobs within the community.
The new hotel development is part of a £20 million regeneration project to help revitalize Walthamstow Central Station, and was officially opened by The Worshipful the Mayor of Waltham Forest, Councillor Terry Wheeler and Travelodge’s Revenue Director, Tom Edwards at an opening ceremony.
The opening of Walthamstow Travelodge boosts the Company’s London portfolio of hotels to 61 and nationwide to 513.
Regenerating the borough
Councillor Wheeler said: “This is a great chapter in the ongoing story of regeneration in the borough. This hotel will help support the local community and will make it easier for people to accommodate their visitors. It is ideally situated close to three train lines in the heart of Walthamstow and will encourage visitors to London to stay here, to the benefit of local businesses and the night-time economy. I know it has already helped a number of local people into employment.”
Manager: Bhavin Desai
Walthamstow Travelodge is being managed by Bhavin Desai, who started his career at Travelodge as a receptionist at London City Road in 2008. Like hundreds of other Travelodge hotel managers, Bhavin has successfully climbed the career ladder from an entry level position into a management position via the Company’s successful in-house training progarmme.
Bhavin has recruited his 19-strong hotel team via the Travelodge’s long established partnership with Job Centre Plus which helps the long term unemployed back into work.
Bhavin Desai commented: “There has been a growing demand for good quality value accommodation in the area for some time. By attracting new visitors to the area, we will annually boost the local economy by £2 million, as our research shows the average Travelodge customer will spend on average £36 in local businesses during their stay.”
