Edgar House in Chester

A Cheshire hotel and Cotswolds B&B are among the big winners in this year’s 2016 Travellers’ Choice awards for hotels, TripAdvisor has revealed today.

Edgar House in Chester topped the world’s Small hotel category; while Maxwell’s Piece B&B in Moreton-in-Marsh was named the second best rated B&B in the world.

Now in their 14th year, the awards honour the world’s most outstanding properties in the categories of Top Hotels, Bargain, B&Bs and Inns, Family, Luxury, Romance, Best Service and Small Hotels. Travellers’ Choice award winners were determined based on the millions of reviews and opinions collected in a single year from TripAdvisor travellers worldwide.

“These awards are based on guest feedback gathered throughout the year, so what sets the winners apart is not just a high standard of service and accommodation, but the fact that they deliver this day in day out,” commented James Kay, TripAdvisor spokesperson, “Given there are almost one million hotels and B&Bs listed on TripAdvisor worldwide, the fact that the UK is home to so many winning properties speaks volumes for the quality and competitiveness of the UK hospitality industry.”

UK home to world’s best rated small hotel

When it comes to the best in boutique hotels, this year the UK can’t be beaten, as it’s revealed that the UK is home to the world’s number one hotel in the Small Hotels category – which honours the best rated hotels with less than 30 rooms. Chester’s Edgar House, is a period Georgian house which is open for adults only. The hotel overlooks the River Dee and has all the features you’d expect of a period building including working fireplaces.

Mike Stephen, Co-Owner of Edgar House said, “We are over the moon to be recognised by TripAdvisor as a 2016 Travellers’ Choice Awards winner. To be named the number one Small Hotel in the world is an incredible honour, and we can’t find the words to say how thrilled and humbled we are. We’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of our team, and of course, a huge thank you to the wonderful hotel and restaurant guests for supporting us, and for helping us win this amazing award.”

Devon is also flying the flag for small hotels as The Old Rectory in Martinhoe places seventh in the world, third in Europe and second in the UK. Muckrach Country House Hotel located in Grantown-on-Spey, Moray, Scotland takes eleventh in Europe and third in the UK.

High-level service doesn’t equal high prices

This year’s awards just go to prove that great service doesn’t have to blow the budget. Five of the UK’s Best Service hotels are also named in the Bargain category, including the Elm Tree Hotel in Llandudno which is named second best rated bargain hotel in the world – rooms there will set you back as little as £37.50 per person, per night.

In fact, the Elm Tree Hotel is one of four winning hotels in the Welsh seaside resort of Llandudno – more than any other destination in the UK, bar London. The others are Lawton Court Hotel, named fourth in the world for Best Service, Lauriston Court Hotel (the sister hotel to Lawton Court Hotel) in seventh place for Best Service in the UK and Can-y-Bae, which comes in 13th place for Best Service in the UK.

The UK as a whole is home to more winners in the Best Service category than any other European country, proving that UK hospitality is more than holding its own compared to the global competition.

Britain is B&B royalty versus rest of the world

With nine of the world’s top 25 B&Bs hailing from the UK this year, including four of the top ten, it’s fair to say that the UK is dominating the B&B category.

The title of second best B&B in the world goes to Maxwell’s Piece B&B in the Cotswolds, while Sayle House in Cambridge, South Lodge Guest House in Bridlington and Llanarthney’s Llwyn Helyg Country House take fifth, sixth and seventh place in the world respectively.

Italy is home to the world #1 B&B this year – Casa Portagioia in Castiglion Fiorentino, Tuscany takes the top spot.

Celebrity chef’s hotel named UK’s #1 in Top Hotels category

For those looking for luxury, the UK winner of the Top Hotels category is Raymond Blanc’s Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons located in Great Milton, Oxfordshire, which also celebrates third in Europe and sixth in the world.

The hotel, in a typically English countryside setting, boasts beautiful gardens, including vegetable and herb gardens that supply the kitchen of the two Michelin star restaurant. There are 32 individually designed guest rooms and suites which each evoke the style of a luxurious country house.

The cheapest month in 2016 to stay at this hotel is September, where a night will set you back £677. While the price per night at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons is at the steeper end of the scale, traveller ratings on TripAdvisor suggest the experience is well worth the price for those who can afford it.

Luxury Palace hotel in Jodhpur, India takes the world title

Elsewhere, Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur in Jodhpur, India – where the average nightly rate on TripAdvisor is £509 – takes the title of world’s top hotel for 2016 in this year’s awards.

Travellers’ Choice awards take into account the quality and quantity of traveller reviews and opinions and traveller ratings specific to each award category. The hallmarks of Travellers’ Choice winners are remarkable service, quality and value.
