Two UK hotels feature in exclusive Conde Nast Traveler Gold ListConde Nast Traveler has revealed its Gold List winners – the editors’ picks for the top hotels in the world, spanning six continents and 34 countries. Described as their collective response to the perennial question ‘What are your favourite hotels in the world?’ the list contains just two UK hotels: The Langham, and Number Sixteen.

Obviously, any hotel featuring in the Gold List will offer amazingly high standards of service, decor, and luxury, but the list identifies hotels by additional attributes in separate sections such as ‘The Little Things’ (The Langham) and ‘Not-so-secret Gardens’ (Number Sixteen).

The Langham

The Langham (pictured top) features inThe Little Things section: “The Langham plays to its literary history with an in-house “book butler.” At turndown, a book is delivered to your bedside table with a leather bookmark and a note from the butler explaining why that particular read was chosen for you. Before drifting off to sleep, you might enjoy the company of Oscar Wilde or Mark Twain.

Selected in the Not-so-secret Gardens section, Number Sixteen is cited as follows: “Sumner Place looks like a picture-perfect set for My Fair Lady—a quiet, tree-lined street where four early-nineteenth-century town houses have been cleverly converted into one of the city’s most comfortable boutique hotels. Avoiding the obvious chintz, the decorators have instead gone on a slightly bizarre journey that combines deliciously overstuffed sofas and pseudo–Old Master paintings with Aboriginal and African sculptures and a huge framed box full of brilliant butterflies. But it works. Frette bed linens in the 42 rooms are sinfully luxurious, and bathrooms come with Miller Harris bath products. Perhaps the best bit is the conservatory, which opens onto a private garden. There is no restaurant, but room service is round-the-clock. Number Sixteen is in South Kensington, so you can walk to museums such as the Victoria & Albert, and Harrods and Hyde Park are a short cab ride away. The staff deserve special mention for their endless smiles and know-how, finessing everything from getting you a table in the restaurant du jour to finding the very best local dry cleaner.”
